It was complicated, it was also just the beginning.
A decision.
A simple choice.
There is always that one moment in life where things could have been different. That one moment where you could have chosen a path that would lead you down a certain road.
A different life.
It was easier to pretend that we were still best friends, and that she was my girl and I was her boy.
Pretending was better than knowing the truth...
I. Ruined. Us.
I had her.
I lost her.
I love her.
All I did was complicate us.

“Our first kiss was our beginning and in some ways our end. This is where our complicated love began.”

The road to love is never easy, especially when everyone and everything seems to be working against you. Complicate Me is a raw, emotional, poignant, grab your tissues because you’re going to need them, read. Yes, that was very long, and doesn’t even begin to describe the emotional upheaval I am in right now after having finished this book. My heart hurts, my head hurts, and I feel like I need some therapy after having finished. If you have ever read one of M. Robinson’s books, you’ll know that is a completely different from anything that’s she written before and yet, still has that roller coaster of emotions that she is known for. Or at least that’s the way I always thought of her books as. They are all great reads.

Complicate Me is a New Adult, Coming of Age, Second Chance at Love, kind of book. It revolves around five young friends growing up and the journey their lives take. Jacob (13), Dylan (13), Austin (11) and our lovely couple Lucas (Bo,12) and Alex (Half Pint, 10). Their friendship spans from very young children to their twenties. We grow to love each of these characters and end the book feeling like we’ve been part of this tumultuous relationship and each characters lives in a big way.

“I love you because I need you. I love you because there is no me without you. I love you because I can’t stop loving you, and I would be lying if I said I had tried.”

Lucas and Alex road to happiness isn’t an easy one paved in gold and Happily Ever After…well, there’s actually a few times I wasn’t sure it was going to happen. There are times I want to smack Lucas upside the head…hard…possibly with a hammer. I spent many a page going “WTF, dude!” This was an angtsy and emotional read that stays with you after you’re done. I loved the fact that you see them grow up and this isn’t an insta-love but something that grows with age. They are soul mates but there are so many obstacles in their way. Some of the obstacles I understood. They are both very young, anyway. At the same time, you can see and feel how much he cares for her and some of the warnings from other characters that put those obstacles in the way didn’t completely jive with me. In any case, they occur and frustrated me and the characters. Why can’t young love be easy and clean? Oh yeah because in reality it NEVER is and I appreciated that the author put those obstacles. Shit happens, guys are guys and ultimately, if it’s meant to be, it will be. These are the lessons we learn in this book and I, for one, can’t wait for the next glimpse into the lives of the other characters. Well done, M. Robinson, for ripping up my heart and putting it back together. I look forward to it happening again.
