Oakley Spurlock is dying.

She only has weeks to live thanks to a freak infection that totally and completely destroyed her kidneys.

Despite her family’s desperation, not a single one of them is a match.

In a last-ditch attempt, Oakley’s father takes to social media to beg for help to save his daughter’s life.

Pace Vineyard is lost. So lost, in fact, that he’s not sure he wants to be found.

But then a beautiful woman’s face is splashed across social media, and Pace finds a spark in his soul for the first time since a bomb went off beside him.

He’s already missing two legs. What’s one more kidney?

At least, that’s what he tells himself.

What he doesn’t expect is to give his heart to the woman, too. Or for the woman to run away with it and force him to follow.

“You’re the reason I get up each day now.”
“You’re crazy,” I told him. “I’m nothing special.”
“You’re everything special.”

I’d Rather Not by Lani Lynn Vale is the third book in the KPD series and has all the feels. Seriously, every book I read from this author is above and beyond amazing but I honestly think she’s written one of my favorite’s with this one. Our lovely heroine Oakley is the daughter of Viddy and Trance from Kevlar to My Vest (The Heroes of the Dixie Wardens MC #3). You may remember them as the couple who happened to have heterochromia (different colored eyes) and they passed on the trait to their kids, Oakley and her brother Ford. All right, enough back story. Let’s get on with the show.

“I stared at the man that was quickly beginning to steal every single piece of my heart. One slow second at a time.”

Even before Oakley and Pace meet, there’s a connection. Oakley sends care packages to her brother Ford, who shares it with his brothers in arms and just happens to include Pace. Pace is enchanted by pictures of Oakley and the love she puts in the packages for her brother. One day while opening up one of those packages, Ford, Pace and the team are attacked, with Pace losing his feet and one of their brothers losing his life. The Army has always been his dream job and without his legs, Pace is at a bit of a crossroads as to what to do. At the same time, Oakley is also dealing with issues as she has contracted an infection that has destroyed her kidneys and will have to be on dialysis until they can find her a new kidney.

“I knew from the moment that I met you that I was put on this Earth to change your life.”

Fast forward four years later and Oakley’s time is nearly up. Her kidneys are now completely failing and without a donor, she will die. So when Pace sees a desperate post from Oakley’s father, he knows that he has to help the girl who has never left his thoughts. And when they finally meet, thus begins the sweetest freaking romance, ever. The swoon factor in this book is off the charts and I adored every flipping second of it.

“I love when you smile at me. I love when you throw yourself in my arms, knowing without a single doubt in your mind that I’ll catch you. I love that you talk to me like I’m your closest confidant and your best friend. I love that you called your dad to talk about us and not your mom. I love that you love me.”

Pace and Oakley are relationship goals. They are super sweet together and I love that Oakley’s family immediately embraces Pace as one of their own. I love that Pace does everything he can to make her see that no matter how much time they may have together, every second will be worth it. My heart!! I can’t stand how utterly perfect Pace is. This is definitely a new favorite book of mine from LLV.
